Class Location: Grover Beach/Oceano Dunes, California
This clinic is designed to gain practical experience driving in sand. The class is entirely behind the wheel.
You will gain new confidence with the capabilities of your vehicle and your skill in dealing with sand.
The class is held at Oceano State Vehicular Recreation Area near Pismo, CA. We use Oceano Dunes when it is too hot in the lower desert! We also offer classes in Borrego Springs, CA, near San Diego, CA. The dunes have quite soft sand compared to a wash. No point wondering later if you and your vehicle can handle really soft sand. We will be able to experiment with tire pressure. We will review safety requirements, driving techniques and vehicle recovery. There is always the possibility that we will need to recover some other vehicle.
Vehicle Requirements:
- You need a stock SUV or 4WD vehicle with 4 low range capability
- Recovery points front and rear.
- FRS radio for communications.
- Dune Flag
- All wheel drive vehicles that do not have a 2 speed transfer case are not appropriate for the class. Two examples of vehicles that are not appropriate for the class include Subaru Forester and the Honda Ridgeline.
The class is limited to 10 vehicles.

“IT WAS AWESOME. Sand is quite a bit different than dirt. There are a couple of things that your common sense will tell you to do that are wrong when in sand. Knowing these are important. There are also tips from Tom on how to get out of sand situations that aren’t obvious. The classroom portion was shorter, and more wheel time. We basically drove until we were tired, which happens quicker than you would think. I had that just off the roller coaster smile on my face most of the day. All in all it’s a good class. I would recommend you take it. Scenery is awesome. After class I stopped in the surf zone, and just sat on top of the roll cage. Nice. ”
