Since a synthetic winch line is a Rope you can easily make an eye using you boy scout skills. However, a knot weakens a line on average by 50%. Splicing maintains 100% of the strength.
Being able to splice a new eye is another advantage of synthetic rope. Even a shorten winch line with a new eye will retrieve you from the trouble you are in.

- The class will focus only on making a new eye. It is fairly easy to make an eye. You need to do it the right way to maintain the strength of the synthetic line.
- The key for strength is learning how to taper the splice
- The class is hands on using the recommended Class II procedures from Samson Rope for a 12-strand rope.
- We will investigate the use of the Brummel knot as an alternative to cross stitching.
- The use of a thimble will be discussed.
If you have a 12-stand rope that had broken bring it to class with you. You can put in a new eye splice to use on a winch or make a custom winch extension rope.
