Description
Event Location: Emery County Utah
May is the perfect time to take a 4-wheel drive trip through Utah, with its warm weather and stunning natural beauty. We plan to spend time in The San Rafael Swell. The highlight of the trip is the view of the “Grand Canyon” of Utah.
The San Rafael Swell is located in central Utah. The Swell is a vast area of rugged terrain that is perfect for 4-wheel drive adventures. It is approximately 2000 square miles of uninhabited area. There are a number of trails and backroads that can be explored in a 4-wheel drive vehicle, and you’ll have the opportunity to see some of the most breathtaking scenery in the state. We plan to spend five days in the Swell and will set up a base camp. Plenty of time for relaxing and Dutch Oven cooking.
THE PLAN:
We will depart Richfield, UT and drop into the Swell near where I-70 heads towards Mussentouchit. Then we will try to hit as many of these points of interest as we can. In no special order:
Eagle canyon north
Fuller Bottom
Swasey’s Cabin
Dutchman Arch
Head of Sinbad
The I-70 bridge from Eagle Canyon
Secret Mesa
Kimball Draw
Cat Canyon
Coper Globe Mine
Red’s Canyon
Black dragon Canyon off west bound 70 nearer Green River
Eva Conover trail
The Wedge Overlook
Buckhorn Pictograph
Mexican Mountain
Fix-it-Pass
Devil’s Race track
Behind the reef
North Coal Wash
Temple Mountain
North Temple Wash
Copper Globe Mine
Most of the roads are in the 1 – 3 rating. There are only a few that rate a 5 difficulty. With all the choices available we can avoid them unless you want more challenge.
Overall, a 4-wheel drive trip through Utah in May is an exciting and rewarding way to experience the state’s diverse landscape and natural beauty.
Everyone needs to be self-sufficient. Make sure to bring all necessary camping gear and supplies. It’s also a good idea to check the weather forecast and pack accordingly.
